Cordillera Central Mountain Range

The Cordillera Central is the largest mountain range in Puerto Rico and runs through the middle of the country, dividing Puerto Rico along an east-west line. This specific mountain range is made up of primarily limestone and forms in the interior region of Puerto Rico. The Cordillera Central consists of three different parts: The Cordillera Central Proper, The Sierra de Cayey, and The Sierra de Luquillo. First off, The Cordillera Central Proper occupies the west-central part of the island and extends about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from San Germán in the west to the watershed between the Manatí and La Plata rivers in the east-central part of the island. Next, the Sierra de Cayey has a more central location that is towards the heart of Puerto Rico, encompassing peaks that rise up to 3000 feet (900 meters). Last but certainly not least, the Sierra de Luquillo is a subsidiary branch of the Sierra de Cayey and constitutes the north-east section of the island. However, this chain of mountains is separated from both other mountain ranges by a multitude of land features, such as the Caguas, Gurabo, and Blanco Valleys. Overall, The Cordillera Central mountain range as a whole is a beautiful geographical feature in Puerto Rico and if you ever get a chance to go, make sure you stop by this amazing national landmark!
